These puzzles employ a concept known as discrete tomography, wherein the numbers serve as clues that indicate the number of unbroken lines of filled-in squares in each row or column. For instance, a clue such as "4 8 3" implies that there are sets of four, eight, and three filled squares in that order, with at least one blank square between each set.
